What Is A Micro?
Fillings without Needles! Many terms can be used to describe the drill-less dentistry technique, including: Micro, Air Abrasion, Needle-Free-Fillings, and Drill-Less. This technique uses a tool that sprays away decay, without the need for numbing or drills.
So, how does Micro Air-Abrasion Work?
An instrument that works like a mini sandblaster is used to spray away decay. Your tooth is first prepared for the air abrasion by cleaning it. Then, during air abrasion, a fine stream of particles is aimed at the decayed portion of the tooth. These particles are made of silica, aluminum oxide or a baking soda mixture and are propelled towards the tooth surface by compressed air that runs through the dental handpiece. Small particles of decay on the tooth's surface are removed as the stream of particles strikes them. The particles of decay are then suctioned away, the filling is put in place and set with a light.

Is Air Abrasion Safe?
YES! The only precautions needed before an air abrasion procedure are protective eyewear, which is used to prevent eye irritation from the spray and the potential use of a rubber dam. The rubber dam is a little rubber sheet or material that fits around the teeth and nearby gums, protecting the areas of the mouth not being treated.

Air Abrasion Advantages:
- Air Abrasion generates no heat, sound, pressure or vibration.
- Reduces the need for anesthesia, especially if the cavity is shallow.
- Leaves more of the healthy tooth tissue behind than with traditional drilling.
- Leaves the working area relatively dry, which is an advantage during placement of composite (tooth colored) fillings.
- Reduces the risk of micro-fracturing or chipping the tooth structure.
- Allows the dentist to treat multiple sites in the mouth during one single visit.
- The procedure is relatively quick and simple.
When can Air Abrasion be used? Air Abrasion is move effective on:
- Early, small cavities - before they enlarge.
- Restoration or repair of small chips on teeth.
- Removal of small discolorations or stains.
- Repair or replacement of tooth colored fillings.
- Preparation of teeth for cosmetic procedures.
- Removal of dark stains in the grooves of teeth.
