Upcoming dental graduates Hello, my name is Christine Dearth and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself and how I got started in private practice. I am originally from the small town of Sistersville, WV. I graduated from WVU School of Dentistry in 1998 and completed my residency program with Charleston Area Medical Center in 2000. After my residency I did what most recent graduates do- look for an associate position; because let’s be realistic, do we really know enough after graduating dental school to start our own business? Hardly. Now we have to start thinking about paying back all of those student loans that have added up over the years! So, I started an associate position in Greensburg, PA, which lasted all of 2 months, because I knew this wasn’t the type of dentistry I wanted to be doing. Upon returning to Morgantown, I took an associate position in Sabraton working for another dentist. After a few months of basically working by myself with a staff that was new to me, I received a call from Dr. Kenneth Wilson asking to take me out to dinner. Well, never being one to pass up a free meal, I gladly went. He informed me that he and Dr. Robert Martino were buying the practice. THAT WAS THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAE HAPPENED TO THAT OFFICE. Fortunately for me, they let me stay on as an associate doctor. I was an associate with Wilson Martino Dental for 4 ½ years and I can’t think of any place better I could have spent those 4 years. Working with Dr. Wilson and Martino was like a continuation of my residency. Not only did I get to learn new techniques in dentistry, but I learned the business of dentistry. They taught me the philosophy of “working smarter, not harder”. You’ll learn how to work not as an individual but as a team, and become an effective team leader. They take care of all the little things so you can focus on becoming a better dentist. You’ll get the chance to interact with other doctors (that are just like you) and share experiences so that you learn together. Your education involves all aspects of dentistry including: marketing, team building, scheduling, insurance, talking with patients, treatment planning; not to mention the latest advances in dentistry, such as cosmetics, implants, ortho, etc. By now I’m sure you’re thinking “this all sounds great, but how about the pay?”- because those student loans aren’t going to pay themselves are they? Well, I know from experience that Wilson Martino’s associates are probably the highest compensated associates in the state. I have to be honest; it was hard to leave that! I always knew I wanted to start my own practice, but never had a clue as to where to begin. With the knowledge I gained with Wilson Martino, I knew I could do it—but it would be scary. I know have a successful practice in Kingwood, WV that we started in October 2004. I’m sure you’ve heard that credit card commercial; well here is my version: 3 crowns…$2100….8 lumineers…$6000….the experience I had with Wilson Martino dental….PRICELESS! If you’re unsure what your future holds after graduation, I strongly suggest to consider an associate position with Wilson Martino Dental. As an associate with them, you also have the potential to become involved in profit sharing if you so choose. It’s not a place where you just float along, see some patients and then go home. Dentistry is much more that that. Those are the practices that fail, because they have no goals to work towards. Here you become involved in every aspect of the practice; I couldn’t have started mine without that knowledge. The possibilities are endless! I hope I have helped share some insight from someone who’s been there. If you have any questions, please fell free to contact me or come visit us as the office. Our phone number is 304-329-3142. Sincerely, Christine L. Dearth, DDS

Dear Dr. Martino, I am writing this letter to thank you for the great impact you had on my career and my life. I took a job with you after I finished my residency, having no idea what I was about to learn. My one year I spent practicing with your dental office with the single best learning experience I have encountered from a business aspect of dentistry. I tell my colleagues that my GPR was where I learned dentistry, and my year with Wilson and Martino was where I learned the business of dentistry. I know from experience that it takes both to have successful dental office. You taught me how to handle patients and staff, “treat your patients like gold and your staff like gold and they’ll make sure you make plenty of gold” was one of my favorite quotes and how true it is! You always involved me with issues on staffing, allowing me to learn from your experience. I always felt as though I had a voice, and I am certain my feedback was considered in decision making. It was kind of like football, where you let me be the quarterback and you were the coach …a coach who lets their quarterback call a lot of his own plays. I guess you could say I had the best of both worlds. I had the freedom to make decision, but when I needed help you were there. I can’t thank you enough for that. You remained there for me when I left your practice to move to the beach. I remember calling you with issues form North Carolina, and you were always there to help. My doctor whom I associated with in North Carolina wasn’t fortunate enough to learn from someone like you. He had a few of the answers for me, so it was my coach in West Virginia on whom I would lean. I could always hear you smiling when you would help. That meant a lot. I took some more advice of yours when I talked my partner into taking the same practice management courses you had taken. He will tell you to this day that it changed his life in a positive way…not his practice, his life! Obviously it was a result of an improvement in his practice, but you get the picture. Pretty amazing stuff. So, anyway, our business has increased 250 percent in 3 years, and we’re preparing to open a second office (I wonder where we got that idea?). While increasing our business, we have also increased the quality of our work, and the quality of our lives. I know it sounds crazy, and you probably don’t’ want to take any credit for it. I’m telling you, Bob, you made an amazing impact on my life (and others as a result). I want to thank you for that. With sincere appreciation and admiration, Aaron Wilharm
