“7 Ways Your Mouth Could Kill You”
Scientists now know that what goes on in your mouth effects the rest of your body. Poor oral health can contribute to and sometimes cause many deadly diseases and conditions. Unfortunately many people still are unaware of this health hazard and the dental profession as a whole has been slow to warn the public.
“Study after study is finding links between oral health and overall health,” says Robert Martino, dentist and CEO of the largest dental organization in West Virginia. “Poor oral health causes infection and inflammation which triggers your body’s immune system to respond. This response can be detrimental to your health, especially for people with heart problems or diabetes.”
Dr. Martino, who is known as The Mouth Doctor, because of his insight on the body mouth connection, feels that his profession is not doing enough to make the public aware of the dangers of an unhealthy mouth. Here is his list of 7 ways your mouth can cause your death:
1. Heart disease – Some studies have shown a relationship between oral bacteria and the buildup of fatty plaques in arteries (atherosclerosis).
2. Diabetes – diabetics have a hard time healing but it is even tougher with bad oral health.
3. Stroke – Inflammation can cause thickening of the walls of arteries.
4. Brain Infection – a broken tooth can get infected and when left untreated can become a Super Infection, which can spread to the brain.
5. Pancreatic Cancer – people with poor oral health have a 63% increased chance of getting Pancreatic cancer.
6. Mouth Cancer – The death rate in the United States for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkin's disease, cancer of the brain, liver, testes, kidney, or ovaries.
7. Pregnancy complication- the same bad bacteria found in your mouth is found in the placenta. Poor oral health can cause low birth weight.
Dr. Martino has been interviewed many times and can explain causes and diseases in layman terms. Interviewers will be able to find out:
• One thing that can reduce the bad bacteria in your mouth by 50% and bad breath by 90%.
• Why some insurance companies are now paying for heart patients to have better oral health.
• What the Founder of the Mayo Clinic says about oral health and life expectancy.
• A simple 30 second test that cost around $60 that could increase oral cancer survival rate from 57% to 90%.
• About a Soap Opera star who recently had oral cancer and after 3 surgeries lived to tell about it.
